Job Description
Assistant Professor of Anthropology
The University of North Carolina Asheville Department of Sociology and Anthropology invites applications for a tenure-track position as an assistant professor in Anthropology to begin Fall 2020. We invite candidates with any substantive and geographic areas of expertise that complement existing faculty contributions yet we are especially interested in candidates with the following concentrations: medical anthropology/health care disparities, migration/immigration/refugees, environmental justice/climate change. An earned Ph.D. in Anthropology or related field is required for a tenure-track position; however, candidates nearing completion of their doctorate (ABD) with a defense expected prior to August 2020 may be considered. The person selected for this position will be expected to teach 12 contact hours per semester (typically three four-hour courses), establish and maintain an active research agenda, and engage in service to the institution, the community and the profession. The successful candidate must be committed to undergraduate teaching in a public liberal arts setting.

The UNC Asheville faculty is committed to disciplinary teaching through an inter- and multi-disciplinary lens and providing a premiere liberal arts education. Candidates should be able to further the department’s strong contribution and commitment to the University’s Diversity Intensive curriculum. UNC Asheville Sociology and Anthropology faculty regularly participate in interdisciplinary programs, including our Liberal Arts Core and Humanities, Africana Studies, American Indian and Indigenous Studies, Asian Studies, Ethnic Studies, Human Rights Studies, International Studies, Latin America and Transatlantic Studies, and Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies.

The applicant should request three letters of reference to be sent separately that address the candidate’s written, verbal and interpersonal skills; ability to teach and mentor undergraduate students; and potential to develop and maintain a successful research program.
